Street and graffiti art has for long been considered to be a cry against suppression and the establishment. Over the years many of these artists have built brands within popular and street cultures and the style became a recognised genre within the sphere of fine art. This played a major role in establishing the careers of now world famous artists like Banksy and others.

Cape Town, with its history of forced removals and social inequality, produced its share of legendary artists who have inspired generations of street and graffiti artists who are active today. With this style now more widely recognisable and acceptable, their work became more sought after and the transition from wall to paper and canvas unavoidable. Artworks that express their style and match the quality of more traditional fine art now sits comfortably in an art gallery or private space.

WORLDART is currently hosting an exhibition that showcases paintings and drawings by the cream of today’s generation of active street and graffiti artists.

The exhibition title, WORSE THAN HEROIN refers to the ironic fact that graffiti artists, when caught by the city authorities, could face punishment harsher than that given to a person caught on street using heroin.

The exhibition runs till 10 October at the WORLDART gallery at 54 Church Street in the Cape Town cbd and provides a great opportunity to come and experience artworks by artists like Conform, Bushy Wopp, Slegh, Mors and Polize.
