Amalgam

A group exhibition

“There are certain natures of which the mutual influence is such, that the more they say, the more they have to say. For these out of association grows adhesion, and out of adhesion, amalgamation.” ― Charlotte Brontë, Villette.

Amalgam is a group exhibition curated by Sulette van der Merwe and hosted by the WORLDART gallery in Cape Town.

In this exhibition three artists, Maurice Mbikayi, Sophia van Wyk and Sulette van der Merwe combine themes in their work to explore the momentum created when ideas are merged.

Artworks in the form of painting, sculpture and digital art weave together the themes in their work to create points of reference that merge and form a whole.

“We are amalgams of cultures, countries, race politics, global systems of economics and more. We navigate our world between the folds of an increasingly manic and surreal experience enhanced by the technology through which we attempt to communicate and connect. My curiosity about the possibilities of hybridisation and exploring the boundaries of adaptability led me into a conversation with Maurice and Sophia,” says van der Merwe.

Maurice Mbikayi interrogates the proliferation of technological commerce and collects remnants

of this rapidly developing technology. He then uses this to create sculptures, photographs and performances.

Sophia van Wyk is a sculptor and describes her work as self-reflexive and sourced from philosophies, psychologies and popular culture. “I create alternative portrayals of encounters and experiences in order to wonder about the possibilities to come.”

Sulette van der Merwe paints objects in in a pop surreal style and explore its meaning when placed in different contexts. She often extends this into video and installation animations.

The exhibition opens on 2 March at the WORLDRT gallery (54 Church Street, Cape Town cbd) and concludes on March 23, 2023..
