My Precious

a solo show by

Boytchie

Phillip Newman (aka Boytchie)’s first solo exhibition will open on Thursday 3 August at the WORLDART gallery in Cape Town. Newman is a young artist who recently graduated with an Honours Degree (Cum Laude) in fine art.

The title of the painting pictured above, “GRILLZ”, refers to the decorative covers often made of gold, silver or jewel-encrusted precious metals that snap over one’s teeth and is particularly popular in hip hop culture.

Titled My Precious, this exhibition deals with the destructive nature of capitalism. “As we know, capitalism has created massive economic inequality and has proven itself to be a system centred around the commodification of people,” Newman says. “This series of paintings explores the greed of consumerism and the discontent in material accumulation. I used hungry looking figures that are twisted and contorted to express what the scramble for social upward mobility looks like and to communicate the dissatisfaction and emptiness that permeate contemporary life.”

The exhibition opens on Thursday 3 August and concludes on 31 August 2023.
