Marcel Herholdt’s first solo exhibition with WORLDART opens on Thursday 4 August at the WORLDART gallery in Cape Town.

Marcel Herholdt (b. 1980) lives and works in Greyton, a small town near Cape Town. He works with paint on canvas and his narrative deals with his dislike of control and authority. His latest body of work will be featured in his first gallery exhibition and is titled Welcome to Club Cocomo.

His Afro-pop protest art paintings shoot from the hip and hits the heart. His style is colourful and solid, his iconography laden with metaphors for hope, peace and love.

The message is simple; resist power and control. Fight war, don’t make war.

The irony is that we’ll all end up in Club Cocomo, a fictional world created by Herholdt that symbolises a paradise park, a place of lost dreams, lost hopes and broken promises.

“For me these paintings are like tickets or stamps that get you entry to Club Cocomo.”

Welcome to Club Cocomo will be on show at the WORLDART gallery from 4 to 25 August 2022.
