Nicholas Kerr aka Dekor One

Nicholas Kerr (aka Dekor_One) ’s first solo exhibition opens on Thursday 3 August at the WORLDART gallery in Cape Town. Kerr is a well-known and respected Johannesburg based street artist whose recently created paintings had been enthusiastically received by lovers of street art. 

The title of this body of work is 3 PENNY OPERA, generally a metaphor for people willing to sell their soles to earn a living. “For me this refers more to what it means to put a monetary value to what I do. After decades of working in the streets and for the moment, having a studio and time present a whole new experience and opportunity. Perfection and quality has become even more important and it took decades to get here, but these days I go into a different zone when I paint and I really enjoy that.”

Kerr often depicts cartoon characters juxtaposed with grungy graffiti marks and textures to create paintings that appeal to an audience who appreciate modern urban visual imagery and the irony that resembles our world.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 3 August and concludes on 31 August 2023.
