Bellyache
by
Geena Wilkinson
Geena Wilkinson’s latest exhibition is titled bellyache and consists of handcrafted ceramic sculptures of sweets and biscuits, so real that you want to reach out and take one. The catch, of course, is that you can’t.
This series scratches at the surface of craving and want and how everyday objects trigger memory and nostalgia. It also speaks about consumption and the satisfaction we get from ignoring our screen time reports that feebly encourage us to stop consuming.
“ The pieces in this body of work come from a few years of collecting pocket fluff - things that you just can’t get unstuck from, things that you go back to over and over again, with little reprieve. These things are both stirring and nostalgic. bellyache is like a museum of innocence, packed neatly behind glass. An island of eye candies, bright colours vibrating alongside one another. Liquorice allsorts and Lovely lollies are blown out of proportion - nostalgia XL.” – Geena Wilkinson
This will be Wilkinson’s first solo exhibition at the WORLDART gallery. It opens on Thursday 1 July and will run through till 30 July 2021.
