ON THE LEVEL - A solo exhibition by Sotiris Moldovanos
This body of work is Sotiris Moldovanos’s first solo exhibition in Cape Town, following a successful online exhibition and three sell out art fair presentations.
Entitled On The Level, Moldovanos presents faceless figures and vivid complex patterns as an exploration of identity in a modern, multilayered reality. The paintings delve into the themes of self-expression, via the use of fashion and streetwear in particular.
“I’m intrigued by how accessible brands in fashion shape personal identity, often becoming symbols of subcultures. These brands were designed for practical and everyday use, but end up as a form of self-expression and authenticity”.
With these paintings the artist skilfully plays with space, colour and texture, using thick swaths of oil paint to create impasto figures that add depth and a tactile quality to the abstract compositions. The paintings feature vivid backgrounds characterized by geometric patterns and shapes that create a sense of rhythm and dialogue between the different works. These backgrounds and the interplay between positive and negative space within the works serve to further offset the realistic elements of the paintings, creating a surrealist landscape for the figures to inhabit.
Moldovanos adds: “I set out to move away from the overly personalized nature of portraits to focus on deconstructing a more universally relatable identity through faceless figures, and explore a sense of depth and space through the use of unique textures and intricate patterns, which work to create and reveal different realities”
This exhibition will be on show at WORLDART (54 Church Street, Cape Town cbd) from 3 – 25 October 2024.
