GAVIN RAIN EXHIBITION

Gavin Rain has in a short time become a favourite with art collectors all over the world and it is our pleasure to announce the opening of his first solo exhibition at the VEO Gallery in Cape Town.

Rain, who uses an intricate and sculptured array of layers and colours to produce artworks that at first glance appear to be beautiful patterns but with closer examination turn out to be images of people, reinforces the notion of stepping back in order to recognise the role of people in our lives and in the composition of the fabric of our society. The works explore this relationship between a tangible aesthetic (engaging with the work by touching it) and a cognitive one (understanding the form and meaning of the resolved image by stepping back and viewing the work from a distance).

“I want to introduce this dialog into my work – to force people to consider the notion of understanding the visual (and thereby society) at multiple levels. To voice the idea that one needs to remove oneself almost entirely from the literal in order to comprehend that which is subtle, but nevertheless intrinsic.”

The exhibition will open at 6pm on Tuesday 20 February and runs till Tuesday 27 February 2007.
