GAVIN RAIN’S FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION – SNEAK PREVIEW

In the 1950s women were earning roughly 62c to the dollar. In 2004 that figure has increased to 68c.

This statistic inspired Gavin Rain to produce a body of work asking questions about gender, equality and the role that sex plays when seen in the context of this statistic. Sex as currency goes beyond the obvious, like using women to ‘sell cars’ or the carefully overlooked subject of sex slave trafficking (more alive now than ever before), into the very weave of our society. Is society shrugging its shoulders and simply accepting it? If this is so, what is the true nature of sexuality and the way it is projected and perceived?

Gavin Rain’s style of painting, making use of pixels and textures to create images that are not instantly recognisable and that constantly changes depending on the distance between the viewer and the artwork, is a very powerful and poignant tool to explore this subject; the hidden in plain sight. The body of work is titled Global Currency and will be on show at the VEO gallery in Greenpoint from 20 to 27 February 2007.
