ARLENE AMALER-RAVIV SOLO SHOW IN JOHANNESBURG

Worldart is pleased to announce the opening of Arlene Amaler-Raviv’s first solo show in Johannesburg since 1989.

Over the last decade, Amaler-Raviv had works placed in important corporate collections, participated in challenging public art projects and represented South Africa at the 2002 Havana Biennale. All good reasons why she did not have time to focus on shows. “It is time and I am very excited.”

On her choice of Johannesburg and the city she says:  “I used to live, work and play here in the 70’s and 80’s and it occupies a very important place in my heart. It is so good to see it becoming accessible again. This is the Johannesburg I love and want to be part of, and it makes a lot of sense to show my work here.”

This exhibition of oil on canvas and aluminum looks deeply at our human condition – both the private and public – in her search to understand her birthplace and the issues of our dense daily lives. She paints what we all feel and see “We weep”, “Makhulu tell me your story”, “Weight” and “The man with the briefest case”.

Her proud work “Jo’burg man” is still walking over Commissioner Street of old, suspended, four years on, above the inner city on the façade of the old Standard Bank Building.

Amaler-Raviv has lived, worked and regularly exhibited in Cape Town the past ten years and has chosen Worldart Johannesburg to show her recent work.

A quote from her notebook reads; “My life has been like traveling up a river. Every now and then I would hear singing around the bend and so around the bend I would go and become occupied with living.”
