When Dave Robertson’s solo show opened in 2011 at the Worldart gallery in Cape Town, many people were surprised when they realised it was an exhibition of paintings – this mainly because Dave is known as a photographer and shortly before that won a Spier Contemporary 2010 award for photography. The paintings impressed, the exhibition sold out and Dave continued with his brand of abstraction.
At the same time, however, he also embarked on a new photography project in which he created abstract images of pictures taken at night in urban settings. The result is a body of work that resonates with humankinds’ shifting consciousness and its perception of the universe, a theme that has always fascinated Dave and that has featured previous assignments.
It is titled Litescapes and consists of a series of nine artworks each 60cm X 85cm in size, editioned at 18.
