NEW BY ATANG TSHIKARE

Atang Tshikare is considered by many in the design world as one of the most exciting prospects in the field to emerge in recent years. With regular invitations to exhibit abroad and the prestigious Southern Guild ‘Future Found Award’ for 2014 his most recent accomplishment, we share that enthusiasm.

At Worldart we generally pursue contemporary art with a strong leaning towards urban art and according to Tshikare, the main reason why his work is labelled ‘street’ art, is because he doesn’t use orthodox methods that are predetermined by a formal education. “I just make things work,” he says.

Programmes director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, says “Atang’s work is redolent of a new dynamic urban dialogue that is emerging in the design consciousness of cities across Africa”, and one that challenges “all the clichés young Africans have to deal with”.

A good abstract painting can usually be judged by the principles of good design – balance, movement, emphasis, simplicity, contrast and unity. These are the qualities we see in Tshikare’s work and why we are confident to present them to you.
