NOT BY A WITCH

Atang Tshikare is considered by many in the design world to be one of the most exciting prospects in the field to emerge in recent years. His style reflects contemporary South Africa and it’s only a matter of time before his designs become recognisable around the world.

It therefor gives us great pleasure to announce the opening of his first solo exhibition of paintings at the Worldart gallery on 4 December 2014. The exhibition will be titled Not by a witch.

According to programmes director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, Tshikare’s work is redolent of a new dynamic urban dialogue that is emerging in the design consciousness of cities across Africa and one that challenges “all the clichés young Africans have to deal with”.

Not by a witch will feature eight paintings of which three are portraits of inspirational friends – Athi-Patra Ruga, Nthato Mokgata (Spoek Mathambo) and Isaac Zavale.

“I know an African proverb that goes: A bird does not change its feathers because the weather is bad. These portraits are about people whom I know and respect because they insist on creating their own destiny. I once had an experience where someone told me things about myself and claimed that she was a witch. Though this was a positive experience, I also realised that one does not need to be told or guided by someone else to find one’s destiny. You are much more likely to do the right thing by pursuing the beauty in things and staying true to your instincts, and that is what this exhibition is about” says Tshikare.

Not by a witch opens on Cape Town’s First Thursday night on 4 December 2014 and concludes on 27 December 2014.
