STREET LEVEL – A GROUP EXHIBITION CURATED BY ANDREW LAMPRECHT

Worldart is proud to announce a group exhibition curated by UCT Fine Art senior lecturer Andrew Lamprecht.

The exhibition titled Street Level uses the ever popular term urban contemporary as a starting point and focuses on work by artists who come from this tradition or often refers to it.

The exhibition is Lamprecht’s view on how urban spaces are marked by these artists and how in turn the street marks them. Despite being showcased in a gallery, these works reimagine the street and reflects on its constraints and its possibilities. Still dealing with a legacy of political restraint the importance of public portrayal and comment remains relevant – be it on canvas or the street.

Participating artists include Svea Josephy, Kilmany-Jo Liversage, Khaya Witbooi, Dion Cupido, David Lurie and Katlego Tlabela.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 4 June and concludes on Friday 26 June 2015.

” ’68 is a reference to the spirit of protest that saw worldwide global student protest on the streets of many cities in 1968. Visually the images reference the more recent strategy of police forces, particularly in the US, of using cable ties, rather than handcuff to detain rioting students. If tied “correctly” and too tightly they effectively cause damage to the nervous system, and the student will be unable to write or continue with academic work. The strategy effectively disables them from continuing to write, paint of use the hands on computer keyboards.” – Katlego Tlabela
