COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

Art of Brother will be launching their exhibition titled Country for Old Men at the Worldart gallery in Cape Town on 2 June 2016.

The exhibition opening coincides with the popular First Thursdays event where galleries stay open till 9pm on the night.

Art of Brother creates interactive design and art through the ritual of story-telling. They describe their work as “crossing paths with the past and the present”. With Country for Old Men they explore how their forefathers represented a more “culturally preferred gender role”, acting out what society thought and felt a man should be.

“What does it mean to be a man today? This exhibition is the act of us searching for the meeting point between the experiences of our forefathers and the present – how they live through us, and how we will live through others in the future.”

Art of brother is a collective comprising of Karabo Makenna and Cobus Engelbrecht that focuses on multi-disciplinary ways of working. They are very interested in personal histories and how this still affects the way of life today. Their current body of work ties back to their personal histories while also dissecting the perception of masculinity in contemporary South Africa.
