THE FORMS OF THE INVISIBLE DEMAND: A SOLO EXHIBITION BY LIZETTE CHIRRIME

WORLDART will be hosting a new solo exhibition by Lizette Chirrime, titled The forms of the invisible demand, the exhibition reflects on her life experiences in both South Africa and Mozambique.

The forms of the invisible demand speaks to the everyday demands that are placed on all individuals in society. From concerns about money, health and wellbeing to compliance with the demands of the state – the concerns we all face as we strive to live freely and with dignity.

Using the language of the spirit, Lizette Chirrime will present a new body of work in her characteristic style, using textiles to weave a narrative that will resonate with all. Lizette creates large-scale textile-driven works on canvas that consists of abstract forms rendered in a collage of printed fabrics.

“These abstract forms evoke the human body and my identity-responsive practice where I refashion my self-image and transcend a painful upbringing that left me shattered and broken. I literally ‘re-stitched’ myself together.”

Lizette Chirrime was born in 1973 in Maputo, Mozambique, where she grew up and attended commercial school until the age of seventeen. Creating artworks using paint and sewing has always been an important pastime for her and she never received a formal arts education. In 2004 she was invited to participate in her first solo exhibition in Mozambique and in 2005 she accepted a three-month residency at Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, South Africa. Chirrime now lives and works in Cape Town.

The forms of the invisible demand opens on Cape Town’s popular art night First Thursdays 6 September and will run until 27 September 2018.
