CONCRETE TRAILS, URBAN TALES

Worldart is pleased to announce the exhibition of a body of abstract paintings by Dave Robertson, titled concrete trails, urban tales. The title refers to the artists’ fascination with marks and textures visible on urban structures, which range  from graffiti painted over to scratches left by motorists.

Translating this ‘found imagery’ into a series of familiar shapes and abstract gestures, Robertson creates beautifully balanced and engaging compositions. Through his use of multiple layers in the form of overlapping sections of painted surfaces, he shows evidence of past activity and reminds us of the ever-changing nature of cityscapes. Containing all the elements that one looks for in a good abstract painting, these works evoke an emotional response that is difficult to ignore.

The exhibition will run from 26 February – 12 March 2011 at the Worldart Gallery

Dave Robertson is a Cape Town-based artist.  He recently received a Spier Contemporary 2010 award for a documentary photographic  project focusing on informal recyclers in Johannesburg. He is well known for a series of expressionist, hand-painted photographs of township scenes  which was exhibited at galleries in Germany and the Netherlands and also at the “Photo LA 2004” in Los Angeles, USA.
